Freedom Collection

Freedom Collection

The Freedom Collection is Active Equine's complete range of turnout rugs for Irish horses β€” built by riders with over 30 years of rug-making experience and designed for the conditions Irish horse owners actually face. Waterproof, breathable, and exceptional fitting, these are the winter horse rugs Ireland has been waiting for. Now available with delivery across Ireland and Europe.

Why We Created the Freedom Range

We've been buying, testing, and arguing about horse rugs for a long time. And for a long time, the same frustrations kept coming up: rugs that rubbed at the shoulder, horses too warm one day and too cold the next, neck covers that took three attempts to detach in the dark. We knew exactly what a better rug would look like β€” because we ride horses ourselves.

The Freedom Collection is what happened when we stopped waiting for someone else to build it.

What Makes Freedom Rugs Different

Fit That Works for Real Horses

Irish horses come in every shape imaginable β€” fine-boned Thoroughbreds, stocky cobs, sport horse crosses with shoulders like barn doors. Our High Shoulder Gusset design accommodates both extremes without compromise, giving narrow horses the coverage they need and broad horses the room to move freely. Combined with our Easy Fit chest design, Freedom rugs stay in place without restricting movement or causing the shoulder rubs that are uncomfortable for your horse and also shorten a rug's useful life.

Waterproofing That Earns Its Rating

A rug is only as good as what happens when the heavens open. Freedom rugs carry a 5000mm hydrostatic head rating paired with a 5000 breathability rating β€” one of the highest combinations available on the market. The Teflon-coated outer shell adds a further layer of stain resistance that holds up across the full season of use. Breathable waterproof horse rugs aren't a nice-to-have in Ireland; they're essential.

A Liner System That Grows with the Forecast

Irish weather changes. Sometimes it changes twice before lunch. Freedom rugs are built around a versatile liner system β€” a 0g-100g base rug that pairs with additional liners to take you up to 200g-300g of total warmth. One rug, one neck cover, several liners: a complete turnout system that adapts without filling an extra shelf in the tack room.

The Detach-a-Neck System

The Detach-a-Neck is the detail that owners notice first and miss most when it's gone. The neck cover removes in seconds β€” no fumbling, no separate storage problem, no reaching over a fidgety horse in the rain. When you need the full combo turnout rug, it's on. When you don't, it's off. For horses that run warm or days when the temperature swings unexpectedly, this matters.

Details That Respect Your Time

Memory foam padding at pressure points. Antimicrobial, anti-static lining that keeps horses comfortable and the rug fresh through extended use. Reflective piping for low-light visibility during early morning or evening yard checks. A reusable storage bag included with every rug. These aren't afterthoughts β€” they're the things experienced riders asked for.

Built for Irish Weather

Ireland doesn't do simple seasons. What we do reliably is rain β€” persistent, sideways, Atlantic rain β€” combined with mild temperatures, high humidity, and the kind of changeable conditions that can take a dry October morning and turn it into a wet November afternoon before you've finished mucking out.

That's the environment Freedom rugs were tested and specified for. Not the cold snaps that hit Europe further east, but the relentless damp that compromises cheaper waterproofing within a season. A 5000/5000 waterproof-breathability rating means your horse stays dry without sweating underneath β€” the combination that matters most when the rain doesn't stop for four days straight.

The breathable outer shell, the antimicrobial lining, and the gusseted fit all work together to manage moisture in a climate where moisture is the constant. Whether you're on the Galway coast or the Kildare plains, your horse needs a rug that understands Irish weather. The Freedom Collection does.

Active Equine delivers across Ireland and throughout Europe, with a returns policy that gives you the time to be sure β€” because horse rugs are too important to rush. Browse the best fitting horse rugs Ireland has to offer, find your horse's size using our fit guide, and order with confidence. If you're not sure where to start, our team rides horses and knows these rugs inside out. We're happy to help.
